Barite - Sardinia
Barite - Sardinia
Locality: Sa Corona 'e sa Craba, Barbusi, Carbonia, South Sardinia Province, Sardinia, Italy
Dimensions: 87*77*88mm/424g
Sa Corona 'e sa Craba — "The Crown of the Goat" in Sardinian — is one of Europe's most respected barite localities, a natural cave carved through Cambrian dolostone in the hills of southwestern Sardinia. Once mined for lead, zinc, and barium ores in the 1930s, the site is now celebrated for the quality of its mineral specimens.
This specimen features transparent to pale green barite crystals in broad, bladed habits, radiating outward in dense clusters with a strong vitreous luster. They grow alongside white granular calcite, creating a richly textured surface, all anchored on a warm orange dolostone matrix — cool crystals against a warm ground, a contrast that feels effortlessly balanced.
Under short-wave UVC, the specimen displays fluorescence with a lingering phosphorescent afterglow — a quiet extra dimension to an already remarkable piece.
