The mines of Monte Mesu, near Villamassargia in southern Sardinia, were once among the most significant barite localities on the island — now all closed, with the finest specimens extracted primarily during the late 1970s. What remains in circulation today is finite.
This specimen presents a dense cluster of prismatic crystals erupting upward from a common base, bold and unapologetic in form. The crystals shift from warm amber gold toward deep honey-brown, their faces carrying a strong vitreous luster with a quiet translucency that reveals depth within. Raw in character, precise in structure — a balance that only time and geology can produce.
The mines are closed. Specimens like this one are no longer being produced.
