A substantial combination specimen, with densely packed purple cubic fluorite crystals rising from a base of fine-grained white dolomite — the striking contrast between white and violet is one of the most instantly recognizable signatures of Elmwood Mine fluorite among collectors. Elmwood, in Smith County, Tennessee, is a Mississippi Valley-Type (MVT) lead-zinc deposit; fluorite, barite, and sphalerite were incidental byproducts of zinc mining there, yet their well-formed crystals and saturated color have made Elmwood one of the world's most celebrated specimen localities.
Color shifts from a lighter lavender toward deeper violet along the crystal edges, with faces that carry a clean, glassy luster in the light; several crystals show stepped growth patterns — locally known as "Carthage corners" — a record of repeated dissolution and recrystallization. Generous in scale, this is a specimen built to anchor a display case.
