Collection: Italian Amber Cretaceous
Castelvecchio lies in Prignano sulla Secchia, Modena Province, Emilia-Romagna, in a valley of the Northern Apennines. Amber from the Apennines has been recorded since the 17th century, and the first report from the Modena area dates to 1886.
This is Cretaceous fossil resin, a Mesozoic amber, found as nodules firmly set in gray host rock, in tones from reddish-brown to orange, with the warm luster typical of resin. Compared with Baltic amber, Apennine amber is far less common, and Mesozoic amber preserved together with its matrix is highly collectible, a record of ancient forests tens of millions of years old.
