The Many Faces of Italian Garnet: From Piemonte to the "Priest's Spring" Grossular

 

One Gem, a Thousand Faces

Garnet has always held a special place in mineral collecting and gemstone tradition. It isn't a single mineral but a vast family, and small shifts in chemistry give each member its own color, clarity, and cast of companion minerals. That diversity is exactly what keeps collectors coming back for more. Garnet can wear the wild, earthy tones of Mali's grossular-andradite intergrowths, or the deep, saturated green of demantoid from Iran in the west of Asia. It can also take the form of something else entirely: a warm orange-red glow, like an alpine sunset caught in stone. That's the color found deep in the Italian Alps — the Grossular garnet from Fontana del Preive, a locality named after a priest, tucked inside Piemonte's Val d'Ala.

Piemonte: The Alpine Cradle of Garnet

Piemonte sits in northwestern Italy, bordered by Switzerland to the north and France to the west — a region ringed on three sides by mountains, with hills and peaks covering more than seventy percent of its land. Its capital, Turin, is known for Baroque architecture and a long industrial legacy, while the International White Truffle Fair held each autumn in Alba draws food lovers from around the world. This same layered, mountainous landscape has also given rise to one of Italy's most celebrated mineral regions.

North of Turin, the Alps fold inward to form a cluster of valleys known as the Lanzo Valleys (Valli di Lanzo), and Val d'Ala is one of them. Geologically, Val d'Ala belongs to the Piemonte Zone of the Western Alps, and it's here that vivid, glassy red Grossular garnet is found.

Garnet isn't the only story here, though. Deep emerald and pale green companion minerals weave through the same specimens, creating the striking color contrast collectors prize. The source of all this color and texture traces back to a rock with real significance in mineralogy: rodingite.

 

Rodingite: Where Calcium Meets Serpentine

Rodingite is a calcium-rich, silica-poor metasomatic rock, and it forms during the serpentinization of mantle peridotite. As seawater works its way into peridotite and converts it to serpentinite, the gabbro and basalt dikes caught within it react to the surrounding calcium-rich, silica-poor conditions, gradually transforming into rodingite — a rock dominated by calcium silicate minerals.

The classic companion minerals that carry this long geological memory include:

  • Diopside
  • Epidote
  • Chlorite
  • Clinochlore
  • Vesuvianite (idocrase)
  • Titanite

It's a geological story that records the shifting of ancient oceanic crust, the Alpine orogeny, and the metamorphism that followed — meaning every Grossular specimen from Val d'Ala is really a small fragment of that history.

Rodingite isn't unique to Italy; it also appears in Norway, Canada, and New Zealand. But few places pair it with a companion-mineral display as rich and visually striking as what's found here.

Val d'Ala's Fire and Orange Signature

Most of the garnet found here belongs to Hessonite, a red-orange, cinnamon-toned variety of Grossular. Rather than forming as large, isolated crystals, it tends to grow in clusters across a pale rodingite base, set off by pale green diopside and deep green clinochlore, and occasionally accompanied by vesuvianite and other calcium silicates. That sharp color contrast is what makes Val d'Ala specimens so appealing — and so easy to recognize at a glance.

Val d'Ala is home to more than one notable garnet locality. Testa Ciarva, near Balme, is one; Fontana del Preive, the subject of this article, is another — both names well known among collectors and mineralogists who study the valley.

Fontana del Preive: The Slender Silhouette of Garnet

Fontana del Preive translates literally from Italian as "the priest's spring," and the name has a story behind it. In the lower reaches of the Rio Chianale valley, within Ala di Stura, there was once a spring — now completely dry — named after a nearby rock formation shaped like a human figure, known locally as "Preive," meaning "the priest." The spring took its name from that rock.

What sets Fontana del Preive apart from Val d'Ala's other localities is the habit of its garnet: crystals here often form pagoda-like stacked aggregates, alongside unusually elongated single crystals. This elongated form is relatively rare among Grossular localities elsewhere, giving Fontana del Preive specimens a distinct identity of their own. It's this combination of geological story and distinctive form that makes seasoned collectors go out of their way to note the provenance and preserve these pieces with care.
