Barite from Sa Corona 'e sa Craba, Sardinia

Sa Corona ‘e sa Craba, Sardinian for “the crown of the goat,” is a natural cave carved by sulfuric acid dissolution within a quartzite vein in the Sulcis-Iglesiente mining district. Cavers first entered it in 1971, in a district mined for lead, zinc and barium since the 1930s. Its barite forms ivory, tabular crystals radiating in feathered fans, finished with a fine druzy sparkle.
