Collection: Quartz from Romania

Cavnic, in Romania’s Maramureș County in the Eastern Carpathians, is a long-established polymetallic mining district, worked from medieval times until its closure in the late 2000s. It is also the type locality of rhodochrosite, and its sulfides and carbonates have long been European collecting classics.

Cavnic’s quartz is known for transparent, slender, needle-like crystals in interlocking sprays, some tinged with soft peach or golden tones. The quartz often grows over silver-gray galena, whose mirror-bright metallic luster sets off the clear white crystals in sharp contrast.
