Botryoidal Calcite on Basalt
Location : Campomorto Quarry, Pietra Massa Locality, Montalto di Castro, Viterbo Province, Lazio, Italy
Demesion : 145*50*65mm

Rare Italian botryoidal calcite is well known for forming on black basalt, where the vivid yellow calcite contrasts strikingly with the dark volcanic matrix. The yellow botryoidal calcite exhibits a wide range of habits: some spheres show semi-translucent outer layers due to secondary crystallization; others appear matte and opaque; while certain crystals display delicate surface textures and a soft luster, with a slightly translucent quality reminiscent of prehnite.

Larger specimens are particularly well suited as decorative pieces for interior spaces. Basalt is traditionally associated with stability and protection, and specimens combining botryoidal calcite with basalt are often appreciated not only for their visual appeal but also for their symbolic association with grounding and harmony within the home.
